Richard Holden (Associate Professor; Acting/Directing; head of undergraduate performance) came to LSU in 2008 after many years as a working professional actor, director and teacher. As an actor, Rick has made scores of appearances in theatres across the country as well as television and film. He was a member of the Broadway company/national tour of Glengarry Glen Ross and was also one of only three American actors to tour with the Monty Python British improv troupe. Recent on camera credits include: 12 Years A Slave (2013 Oscar for Best Picture), Search Party, 99 Homes (release date, fall 2014), Salem, and Starcrossed.Among many other film credits are The Grifters (John Cusack, Annette Bening) and Little Nikita (Sydney Portier). His television credits include many recurring and guest starring roles on shows such as The Practice, Boston Public, Jag, LA Law, 24 and many others.Rick is also active in the burgeoning Louisiana film and television industry.
More recent stage credits include Tigers Be Still at Theatre Squared (Theatre Guild Award for Best New Small Professional Theatre in America). He has worked at the Tony Award winning Marc Taper Forum, Los Angeles Actors Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse, and many others. He received several L.A. Dramalogue/Backstage West awards, and was nominated for two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards. He received a LADCC Best Ensemble Acting Award in 2006 as a member of the California Repertory Company. Since coming to LSU, he has appeared in Swine Palace’s The Royal Family and directed the Mainstage productions of A Cry of Players, Tartuffe: Born Again, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and Five Flights. He is a long-time member of Actors Equity Association (AEA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
Rick received a BS from Xavier University (Ohio), an MFA from California State University, Long Beach, and studied for many years with renowned acting teacher and director, Gordon Hunt.
He has taught acting, directing, and critical studies at Cal State Long Beach, Loyola University New Orleans, the University of Arkansas, and for several years, a weekly, professional acting class in Los Angeles. Rick lives in Baton Rouge with his wife, Annie.
